What You’ll Do
In this role as a Functional Safety Engineer, you’ll be actively engaged in the development of systems and software throughout the entire product lifecycle. From strategic planning and selecting technology partners to reviewing safety documentation and contributing to concept design, you’ll play a critical part in shaping safe, reliable automotive systems. You'll work closely with cross-functional teams including electrical, mechanical, and software engineering, as well as external partners and suppliers.
You’ll be responsible for conducting and supporting various safety analyses at the system, subsystem, and software levels. Your collaboration with design teams will help develop robust, safety-compliant architectures and solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee and manage safety processes across all stages of the development lifecycle.
- Lead issue tracking, change control, and configuration management by ISO 26262.
- Assist project managers in planning and monitoring functional safety tasks.
- Ensure all system and software development activities meet applicable functional safety standards.
- Create and maintain work products from system-level requirements through to software design, implementation, and testing.
- Define both functional and technical safety requirements at system and subsystem levels.
- Specify software safety requirements for application and platform software.
- Develop safety concepts and mitigation strategies at both system and software levels.
- Contribute to hardware-software interface (HSI) specifications in collaboration with hardware teams.
- Ensure project timelines align with safety planning milestones.
- Coordinate safety-related tasks and expectations with customers and suppliers.
- Support integration and implementation of software safety requirements within both application and platform layers.
- Help define software architectures that support safety goals, including techniques like ASIL decomposition, freedom-from-interference, and dependent failure analysis.
- Conduct safety assessments using FTA, FMEA, and other critical analysis methods.
- Support test planning and execution to verify software safety requirements at various stages of testing (unit, integration, embedded).
- Maintain thorough documentation of safety requirements, design decisions, analysis outcomes, and validation steps.
- Provide training, coaching, and mentorship to engineering teams on functional safety principles and practices.
- Assist in embedding functional safety standards and industry best practices into organizational processes.
- Manage and organize technical documentation, ensuring proper version control and timely updates.
Required Qualifications
- A degree in Mechatronics, Embedded Systems, Electrical, Electronics, or a related engineering discipline
- At least 4 years of experience in system or software development with a focus on safety, particularly with ASIL C or D
- A minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience in functional safety, preferably within the automotive domain
- Strong understanding of ISO 26262 Parts 6 and 9
- Hands-on experience with AUTOSAR-based development environments, especially Vector DaVinci tools
- Proficiency in C or C++, and/or experience with model-based design using Simulink
- Familiarity with ASPICE and Agile software development processes
- System Safety experience of ISO 26262 Parts 2, 3, 4 and 8 is a plus
- Familiarity with hardware safety is a plus
- Comfortable working with tools like DOORS, Polarion, JAMA, Jira, Git, Azure DevOps, or SVN
- Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects
- A proactive, results-driven attitude with a strong sense of integrity
- Willingness to coach and mentor others in functional safety practices
- Certifications such as CFSE (Certified Functional Safety Expert) or CFSP (Certified Functional Safety Professional) are a plus
